Hijrah privacy policy
Effective date: 13 October 2026.
Hijrah is an app for learning Islam. We built it to work without collecting your personal data.
What we collect
Nothing. Hijrah collects no data, on any platform (iPhone, iPad, Android). It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, no crash reporting and no push-notification server. Nothing you do in the app is sent to us or to anyone else.
What stays on your device
The following is stored only on your phone and is never sent to us:
- the name or username you choose (optional)
- your learning progress, streak and points
- your Hifdh sessions (lines recited, words recalled, time, the lines to practise again, and which lines you recited, for the review schedule)
- your settings (language, appearance, reminders, fiqh path, reciter)
- your Qurʾān bookmarks, notes and reading marks
- the place you chose for prayer times (if you chose “My location”, rounded to about 100 m) and your mosque’s iqama times, if you entered them
- copies of Qurʾān text and recitation timings, kept so the app works faster and offline, and the audio, books and models you choose to download
Deleting the app deletes all of this. You can also reset your progress in Profile.
Optional backup of your progress
Your progress is not included in your phone’s backup unless you ask for it. In Profile → Backup you can turn on “Back up my progress to my Google account” (Android) or “Back up my progress to iCloud” (iPhone). It is off by default.
When it is on, the app keeps one small file with your lessons, streak and points, Hifdh sessions, Kids Corner, Qurʾān bookmarks and reading marks, and your settings, and your phone’s own backup (Android Backup to your Google account, or iCloud Backup) includes that file, so your progress comes back if you reinstall the app or move to a new phone. The file never includes your name, your location or prayer place, your mosque, or any downloaded content. The backup is made by your phone’s system into your own account: Hijrah has no access to it and receives nothing. On Android no other app data is ever backed up. When you turn the switch off, the file is deleted from your phone, and your next system backup no longer contains it.
Services the app connects to
To show the Qurʾān and play recitations, the app downloads content from:
- the Quran Foundation (api.quran.com, api.qurancdn.com), directly or through Hijrah’s own server (qf.hijrah-app.com, which adds Hijrah’s Quran Foundation credentials): Qurʾān text, translations, tafsīr, reciters and timings
- quranicaudio.com and everyayah.com: recitation audio
- audio.hijrah-app.com (Hijrah’s own storage, hosted by Cloudflare): lesson and book audio, al-Qāʿidah al-Madaniyyah pages and clips, the ḥadīth collections and the pronunciation checker
- cdn.jsdelivr.net: ḥadīth texts read online before you download a collection
- only when you open the Zakāh calculator or tap its refresh button, two fixed requests, the same for everyone: api.gold-api.com (the gold and silver market prices in US dollars) and api.frankfurter.dev (version 2: all exchange rates against the US dollar). Your currency is not sent: every rate is downloaded and the one you need is picked on your phone. The last prices are kept on your phone for when you are offline, and you can always type your own prices instead.
- if you follow a mosque’s times: mosqueprayertimes.com (Masjid Dhoun Nourain) or, from v2 only (not in this version), MAWAQIT, through Hijrah’s own server (mawaqit.hijrah-app.com), for the mosque you chose
These requests only fetch content. They contain no identifier, no account, and nothing about you, your progress, your settings or your location. Like any website, these services receive your device’s IP address when the app requests content, as part of the connection. Hijrah’s own servers do not log or keep it (request logging is turned off), and no service gets your name, progress or settings. Their own privacy policies apply.
Links you choose to open (a scholar’s website, a fatwā search on Google, our privacy page) open in your browser, outside the app.
This website (hijrah-app.com, not the app) counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics: no cookies, no fingerprinting, no personal data; it only gives totals such as page views and countries.
Location
The app asks for your location only when you choose “My location” for prayer times or the Qiblah. It is used on your phone to calculate prayer times and the direction of the Qiblah, and to schedule prayer reminders. It is never sent to us or to anyone else. The name of your place, its time zone and country are found on your phone, in the list of cities built into the app; the app does not use your phone system’s online address lookup, which would send your position to Apple or Google. City search also runs on your phone.
From v2 only (not in this version), “Mosques near me” (Find my mosque) would be the one exception you choose: it sends your position rounded to about 1 km to Hijrah’s server, which passes that rounded point to MAWAQIT to list the nearest mosques. Neither keeps it beyond a day’s shared cache of the results. This policy will say so before that feature is turned on.
Microphone (Hifdh mode)
The app asks for the microphone only if you turn on “Listen to my recitation” in Hifdh mode. Your recitation is then turned into words by your phone’s own speech recogniser, on the device (Apple’s on-device recogniser on iPhone, Android’s on-device recogniser on Android 13 and later), to show each word you say. The app requires on-device recognition, so the audio is never sent to Apple, Google or anyone else, including us. The app never records or keeps the audio. If your phone cannot recognise Arabic on the device, listening is not offered and nothing is sent to a server instead. On Android, the Arabic model may first have to be downloaded by the system, if you ask for it.
The optional pronunciation checker also runs on your phone, with a model you download once.
Reminders
Naseeh reminders and prayer alerts are scheduled on your device. No notification server is involved, and you can turn them off in Profile or in your phone's Settings.
Reports
When you report a bug or a content error, the app opens an e-mail to reports@hijrah-app.com in your own e-mail app. Nothing is sent unless you press Send there. You see the whole message before sending it, including the technical details attached (app version, device model, system version, app language, the screen you reported from); no device identifier, log or location is attached. We use these reports only to answer you and fix the problem, and we do not share them.
Children
Hijrah includes a Kids Corner and collects no data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date above. If we ever start collecting data (for example for a future questions-and-answers service), we will ask for your consent first.
